Mr Brown's Tuckshop

Who’s Mr Brown and why should I visit his Tuckshop?

Your must try cafe in 2018 is Mr Brown’s Tuckshop. Tucked away in a small shoppping complex in Labrador is this gem serving up delighful dishes with menu items I’ve not seen anywhere else on the Coast.

Owners, Robbie and Chee are a breath of fresh air. They are passionate about creating food from the heart so be assured this is honest food made from scratch using local small suppliers.

Both have an extensive history of working in the Gold Coast hospitality scene

with Chee growing up working in her parents Chinese restaurant and while she

toyed with the idea of working in the medical and health industry, she just

couldn’t fight the hospitality gene flowing through her body.

Robbie (or as their youngest patron’s call him ‘Mr Brown’) on the otherhand always

knew hospitality was his calling having worked in some of the Gold Coast’s best

known establishments, think the Sheraton, Blue Grotto, Mario’s and Alto’s before

stepping into the  role of owner. Initially, this role took him to Melbourne where he

opened his first café however the lure of the Gold Coast called him back and now

you can find him casually serving his Labrador customers with his friendly banter,

seven days a week.

So what’s on the menu?

Well, let’s start with the coffee – because coffee is LIFE! At Mr Brown’s Tuckshop they serve up 5 Senses ‘Crompton Road’ Blend  and it runs through a Senso coffee machine which is specifically designed for 5 Senses – and they are the only shop on the coast serving it up – so if you ‘re a coffee connoissure you must come and try this unique coffee experience but if you simply just want your daily fix then you will love it too!

If you’re having a caffeine free day, the you’ll also find smoothies and kombucha but I recommend their homemade slushies – the Kokoloco is packed with strawberries, coconut and mint and is refreshing and cooling, perfect on a warm day or for the moring after a big night before!

Right, let me tell you about the food. Well there is a hint of asian fusion running through the menu and

hot sauce sits on every table. I wanted to try something completely different and the Egg Chiffon

cought my eye. This is a full of flavour shittake mushroom fried rice hiding under a delicate thin egg

omlette with Foo Yong gravy and prawn chips served as a accompaniment.

The three irresistible Jaffels on the menu might just have you pulling out your hair as you try to decide

on which to enjoy – do you go for the moorish mac and cheese with spec and truffle oil, the meaty

pulled pork with smokey cheese and kimchi or the tasty vegetarian option of roasted shrooms with

goats cheese and caramalised onions. Whichever you choose you will not be dissapointed.

The homemade smokey beans on toast with eggs and feta was a menu item that Robbie talked to me

about – but you’ll have to ask him youself to find out how this recipe came about.

Therfe are the obligitory breakfasts itmes but none of them are ordinary - like bacon & egg rolls on soft milk buns, smoothie bowls overflowing with fresh, seasonal fruits and eggs benny with in-house made hollendaise sauce, OMG, it'sso good!

If you don’t have time to sit, they have a fully stocked cabinet with bircher museli to go, toasty bits with various toppings, seasonal salads, tasty muffins, cakes and brioche style donuts that melt in your mouth, YUM!

This is soul food at its very best. Everything is made from scratch – try the eggs benedict and you will know that this is fresh and tasty , not processed – and the service is from the heart. Regulars are known by name and by coffee and shouts

of “thank you” echo across the counter as customers finish up and head off, well nourished, to get on

with their day.

So what are you waiting for? Make a date at Mr Brown’s Tuckshop and enjoy this little hidden gem of
